William II: Spartacus Article
William Rufus (the Red), the second surviving son of William I and Matilda of Flanders, was born in about 1056. Robert, his elder brother, was expected to become king of England when William I died. However, William preferred Rufus who, unlike Robert, had remained loyal to his father. William Rufus became king of England in 1087 and the following year, Odo of Bayeux, Robert Mortain and Richard FitzGilbert led a rebellion against his rule. Many Normans remained loyal and William defeated the rebels.
