Introduction: Domesday Book
Commissioned in December 1085 by William the Conquerer, who invaded England in 1066. The first draft was completed in August 1086 and contained records for 13,418 settlements in the English counties south of the rivers Ribble and Tees (the border with Scotland at the time). This site has been set up to enable visitors to find out the history of the local area as it was in the 11th century. This site does not yet contain all the information contained in the original text, however does include information for every settlement existing in 1086.
